As a Careers Link Governor, what information is available to me?

Last year Government launched the Careers Strategy giving The Careers & Enterprise Company (CEC) a central role in driving forward careers provision. The CEC is a national network that connects schools and colleges, employers and career programme providers, helping to inspire and prepare young people for the fast-changing world of work. At a local level, the Berkshire EAN, led by the CEC and Thames Valley Berkshire LEP, provides those links between school and business.

You will be aware that the 2017 Governors Handbook: paragraph 6.4.9 covers the duties of the governing body in relation to careers guidance activities and states that “…subject to this duty must have regard to the careers statutory guidance to ensure that high-quality careers advice and guidance is provided to pupils. Boards should provide clear advice to the head teacher on which he/she can’ base a strategy for advice and guidance, which is appropriately resourced and meets the school’s legal requirements.”

Schools however, also have a legal duty to ensure that all pupils are provided with careers guidance from year 8 to year 13. The Statutory Guidance, published in January 2018, outlines why schools must secure independent careers guidance for young people, what they must do to comply with their legal responsibilities in this area and the role of the governing body and head teacher in shaping the guidance and support offered by the school.

The Guidance sets out the expectation that schools need to be working towards meeting the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks for Good Careers. The CEC has produced a useful briefing on what the Statutory Guidance means for your careers provision in schools. It can be downloaded at https://vimeo.com/257031763

As a Careers Link Governor there is also a wealth of information available from Thames Valley Berkshire LEP’s Berkshire Skills Priority Statement and STEAM Strategy. The Statement and Labour Market resources are aimed to enhance your school’s curriculum planning, careers programme, parents and student information events. They contain a wealth of information about the skills needs of the local economy and include a set of recommendations that aim to help reduce local skills shortages. This will support your school to fulfil Benchmark 2: Learning from Career and Labour Market Information.
